According to findings from a systematic review of a broad range of data and published in The Lancet Oncology, women with endometriosis have a much higher incidence of ovarian cancers compared to the general public.
Specifically, women with a history of endometriosis are:
-- Twice as likely to develop low-grade serous ovarian cancer
-- Twice as likely to develop endometriod invasive ovarian cancer
-- Three times more likely to develop clear cell ovarian cancer
These findings were reached by the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, 'an international collaborative focused on genetic polymorphisms associated with ovarian cancer.' The Consortium analyzed 13 case-control studies that involved over 20,000 women.
The researchers noted that "Clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of specific subtypes of ovarian cancer in women with endometriosis ... We are learning that ovarian cancer is not one disease, but rather several diseases with distinct molecular and epidemiological causes."
