If Marcus Muhich had listened to any one of the three doctors he consulted about his liver cancer, he would likely not be alive today.
Muhich had hepatic sarcoma, an enormous tumor on his liver--said to be 8 full pounds and a foot long--and three doctors at academic hospitals told him it was inoperable. He finally found one that said otherwise--Dr. Margo Shoup at Loyola University Medical Center--and after two years, he remains both alive and cancer free.
Shoup concluded that although the tumor was large, it was well-contained in the cavity and had not metastasized. She believed it could be removed, and after a 5-hour surgery, she had succeeded.
Despite all that is written about chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy, surgery remains the most effective medical intervention in cancer in bringing about cures.
