A German woman and cancer survivor should give hope to others like her who want a family in the future but face a cancer diagnosis in the present.
According to a case report in the German-language journal Deutsches Arzteblatt International, in 2003 a young woman was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma. She received chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, only to have the disease recur in 2005. Facing further treatment and a risk to her fertility, she had some ovarian tissue removed by way of laparoscopy and cryopreserved.
She received high-dose chemotherapy and after 5 years was still disease-free. Desiring a family, in 2010 she had the preserved ovarian tissue retransplanted into her right abdominal wall and underwent hormone treatments. She then conceived, and in October 2011 delivered a healthy child.
In doing so she becomes one of just 15 known live births worldwide following the re-transplantation of preserved ovarian tissue.
