47 year old Adam Yauch, known by his stage name MCA, one third of the influential hip-hop group The Beastie Boys, succumbed to cancer on 4 May, three years after first being diagnosed.

His influence on today's biggest music and hip-hop stars did not go unnoticed, as various artists paid tribute to him today, ranging from Snoop Dogg, Travis Barker, Weezer, and Jack Black to Eminem, all of whom expressed feelings of sadness and respect for Yauch.

Ever since the Beastie Boys' first album, "Licensed to Ill" was released in 1986, the Brooklyn-based hip-hop trio has sold millions of albums worldwide and Yauch himself branched into other areas of life, notably spirituality, as Yauch was the founder of the Tibetan Freedom Concert.

Yauch died from a rare salivary gland cancer that he first noticed back in 2009. At the time he said he believed the cancer was treatable. At the time his had reached a nearby lymph node.

According to most statistics, the type of tumor it is believed Yauch had is extremely rare. Specifically, the tumor was found in his right parotid gland, the largest type salivary gland. Cancer of the parotid gland is very rare, accounting for no more than seven percent of all head and neck tumors.

Statistics say that over half of all people with parotid cancers survive ten years or longer, although if the cancer has reached a nearby lymph node, survival times are cut in half.
