Colon cancer has New Jersey Congressman 'gravely ill'

Rep Payne.jpg

U.S. Rep. Donald Payne, the 77 year old Democrat from New Jersey and the first African American member of Congress from that state, has left Washington for his home state to continue to receive treatment for his cancer.

Rep. Payne announced that he had been diagnosed with colon cancer last month. He said his cancer was treatable and that he would continue his campaign for a 13th term in Congress.

However, Rep. Payne was said to have been flown back to the Garden State on a medical transport flight, and at least one New Jersey political website claimed that the Congressman was "gravely ill," and Rep. Payne's son sounded little more enthusiastic about his father's condition, saying "We're still optimistic but ... it's cancer."
