The New Jersey attorney general's consumer affairs division on Friday ordered a CVS pharmacy in Chatham, New Jersey to explain how they could have accidentally dispensed the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen to about 50 families for their children, instead of what they had been prescribed, which was fluoride pills.
No injuries have been reported but the story is causing quite a bit of alarm, as one might imagine. The investigation is seeking to understand how such an enormous mistake could have been made.
In the meantime, the director of public relations for CVS, which is the second largest drugstore chain in the United States after Walgreens, issued an apology and said all the families had been contacted and that the company is cooperating fully with the investigation.
