Two prominent organizations have awarded a total of $7.75 million in grants to fund cancer treatment research at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has awarded $6.25 million in grants to the Knight Cancer Institute to finance research into treatments for hematologic cancers including leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The research will be led by the institute's famed director, Dr. Brian Druker, widely credited for his development of the drug Gleevec, which has transformed the lives of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).
An additional $1.5 million across three grants has been awarded by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund research into treatments for breast cancer, including improved screening and investigations into the genetic origins of the disease.
