According to a new study out of Sweden, the risk of developing especially aggressive breast cancer is significantly lower in women who drink a lot of coffee everyday.
The report, which was published in the May 11 online edition of Breast Cancer Research, noted that females who drank up at minimum five cups of Joe per day were up to 57 percent less likely to develop ER-negative breast cancer than those who drank less than a single cup per day. Apparently, as per an MSNBC report on the topic, the many phytoestrogens in coffee may have estrogen-effects that impact the disorder.
In order to attain their results, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm used surveys to track the health and activities of nearly 6,000 women. The subjects’ ages ranged from 50 to 74.
"Before I would go to tell my neighbors to start drinking more coffee than they already do, I would like to know what is the biological mechanism at work here," study author Dr. Per Hal, professor of medical epidemiology and biostatistics at the institute, told HealthDay. "And that's not yet clear."
Because this study is still in its infancy stages and has not been truly corroborated yet, scientists warn women against abusing coffee in hopes of reducing cancer risks at this point in time.
