According to findings published in , doctors may have a new weapon in the war against cancer: removing a cancer cell's ability to defend itselfagainst the harm done by radiation therapy.
Since radiation kills cells by causing damage to the cell's DNA, researchers at the Winship Cancer Institute are developing a technique that disables the cell's DNA repair capacity which sensitizes the cells to the killing effects of radiation.
This technique, which is still experimental, uses modified lentiviruses to introduce RNA molecules into cells that in effect shutter the genes required by the cell to rebuild that DNA.
These lentiviruses are the same kinds of viruses utilized in emerging gene therapy research.
