Some hospitals adopt safe patient care practices better than others

ancc.jpg

According to a study appearing in the Journal of Nursing Administration, there are some hospitals that are far more likely to adopt safe patient care practices than other hospitals. Fortunately, it isn't too difficult to figure out which ones.

Authors of the study say that so-called Magnet Hospitals—hospitals that have been awarded the "Magnet Hospital" designation for meeting high nursing standards, are the hospitals where safe patient care practices are more readily adopted than at those hospitals that lack the same certification.

There are 391 Magnet hospitals in the United States, and they have a reputation for sharing several characteristics:

-- larger bed size
-- nonprofit
-- care for a below-average percentage of Medicare & Medicaid patients
-- clinical technologies often more advanced
-- higher percentage of RNs to LPNs and nursing assistants

In the past, other studies have shown that there is often a correlation between Magnet certification at a hospital and the improved outcome of those patients.
