The new director of the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been sworn in, becoming the 14th director in the 73 year history of the nation's leading cancer institute.
Harold E. Varmus MD previously served as president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City, an NCI-designated cancer center, and he is a Nobel laureate in Medicine; he was a co-recipient of the prize in 1989 for his work in cancer and genetics.
From 1993 to 1999, Dr. Varmus served as the director of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH is composed of 27 Institutes and Centers, one of which is the National Cancer Institute.
